Unpacking in the right order turns chaos into a home in about a week.
The temptation is to unpack everything at once. The better approach is to make a small number of things fully functional, then expand outward.
Day one
- Assemble and make the beds before anything else
- Set up one bathroom completely: shower curtain, towels, toiletries, paper
- Unpack the coffee maker, kettle, a few dishes, and basic utensils

- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Days two and three

- Find the nearest grocery, pharmacy, hardware store, and urgent care
- Locate the fire station, hospital, and non-emergency police line
- Learn the trash and recycling schedule
- Note snow, parking, and noise ordinances if applicable
- Introduce yourself to immediate neighbors
- Register with the local library
Start the maintenance habit
In the first month, walk the house with a notebook and write down the age and condition of the roof, HVAC, water heater, and appliances. That single page becomes the basis for your maintenance calendar and your repair reserve.
